A collection of eighteen papers resulting from a symposium, the objective of which was to facilitate discussion on the fundamental problems of the European Early Upper Paleolithic period (c.30,000--45,000 BP), with special focus on innovative techniques, methods, or theoretical frameworks that have resituated the problems and knowledge of the Early Upper Palaeolithic. The work is divided into three sections -- the transition from Late Midd.e Palaeolithic to Early Upper Palaeolithic; questions of typological significance and technological organization; and explaining inter-assemblage variability.
