Abstract: |
Papers from the Sixth Oxford Symposium on coinage and monetary history are introduced by A E Lieber's contribution (1-34) on international trade and coinage in the Northern Lands during the early Middle Ages. Other papers relevant to British interests are: P Ilisch (129-46) on German Viking-age coinage and the North; M Blackburn & K Jonsson on the Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman element of N European coin finds (147-256); B Kluge (257-325) on AS elements in Slav coin-hoards of 10th to 12th centuries (in German); D M Metcalf (329-82) on statistical analysis of the Viking-age hoards and the interpretation of wastage rates; and C S S Lyon (383-90) on some uses of scatter diagrams for demonstrating heterogeneity in Viking-age coinage and coin hoards. T Talvio (487-90) resolves a misinterpretation of Mercian coins from Russia; I Stewart (491-4) enquires how AS coins reached Finland; M Blackburn & D M Metcalf with C S S Lyon (495-524) play five-finger exercises on the List hoard; C S S Lyon (525-32) discusses the metrology of Aethelred's Long Cross type at Lincoln. M Dolley provides an extended summing-up (535-52) and an index of coin hoards completes the work. |
