Abstract: |
First volume of a corpus of Cardiganshire place-names containing some 15,000 headwords. Each headword is followed by a location by grid-reference and, when possible, by a notation of pronunciation in phonetic script, by historical forms, and often by a discussion of etymologies. The work is primarily meant to be a record of the locations, age, pronunciation and explanation of place-names in the county of Cardiganshire in Wales. Some introductory chapters detail the mode of presentation and spelling guidelines, as well as giving an overview of the development of academic toponymic work in Wales and a parish-number concordance. Names are arranged under civil-parish headings within sections for each commote, and in alphabetical order under separate sub-headings for settlements, geonyms and hodonyms. Separate sections in Volume III deal with hydronyms and macrotoponyms, and are followed by a place-name index. |
