Abstract: |
SU 315864. Re-excavation was undertaken, because of continuing plough attrition, to test the pre-hillfort character and economy of the site. No proof of domestic occupation was recovered for the first two phases of the earthwork, but internal structures of several kinds (round and oval buildings, pits and four-posters) occurred in the third phase. The site's many anomalies include an enormous variety of BA pottery fabrics and the permanent character of its early earthworks contrastmg wlth the slight contemporary occupation. Rams Hill is discussed in relation to its siting near varied resources, the earthworks discovered by new field survey, its environmental evidence, the likelihood of transhumance, and relationships with henges and barrows. |
