Abstract: |
Discusses the evidence from sites and from surface collection for the period 5000-2000 bc. Physical background and environmental evidence are examined before looking at landscape changes and the character of the settlement (which is compared with adjacent Continental evidence). The area was well occupied before Neo settlers introduced intensive cereal growing and small cattle herds. Blocks of settlement relate to monuments such as chambered tombs or causewayed enclosures. In the later Neo there was expansion of settlement, new types of monument, and blocking of chambered tombs. The 'Neo standstill' is a local effect due to shifting settlement. Conflict is seen, burial and exchange patterns change. The Thames Basin pattern differs from that of SOM and Single Grave Culture until the full Bronze Age sees a closer match. |
