Abstract:
Covers all the excavations to 1978. The historical background (eg of Anglo-Scandinavian settlements in the area) is given, with analyses of the town plan by T R Slater and of the postmed market town by D Hey. The town had a burh (in two phases?), a Norman castle, and friaries. A survey of the White Lion Inn is provided. Finds are mostly pottery, with some faunal evidence which includes materials for hornworking and for sheepskin preparation in 13th-15th centuries, and may indicate specialized butchery. Much remains to be determined about the pottery industry - how many potters, how similar were their products, date of starting the industry, etc.
