Abstract: |
Catalogue of the British forts, with commentary which describes Roman military defences before the invasion of Britain, discusses constructional and organisational aspects, the siting, size and shape of forts, their ramparts, walls, towers and ditches. Lines for future research are suggested and advice on excavation of fort defences (to ensure comparability and usefulness of results) is given. It should be fruitful to compare forts with camps and with towns, especially in the context of extra-British material and of later periods of defence. |
