Abstract: |
Illustrated catalogue and discussion of the form, origins, burial context, associations and chronology of the pottery in Northumberland and Durham (including Tyne-Wear). All the pots have developed from the Mortlake and Fengate substyles of the Peterborough tradition; there is also some Grooved Ware influence but minimal Beaker contribution. The burial rite was individual inhumation below round mounds for Food Vessel users, cremation for Urn users. Beaker burials ceased with the Food Vessel ones and the differences between all users may have been social rather than cultural. The chronology has to rest on a few 14C dates; most of the pot types were in use at the same time. |
