Abstract: |
Twelve papers are printed, of which several have direct archaeological reference. N P Brooks (81-103) presents the non-archaeological evidence for arms, armour and horsegear. Richard Gem (105-14) considers what churches might be assigned to this reign, St Mary-in-Castro at Dover being a good, though unproved, candidate. Michael Dolley examines the coinage (115-33) and concludes that Ethelred passed on to his successors a highly efficient and sophisticated organization for coin production. The quantity of gold and silver plaited wire rings suggests to David Hinton (135-58) that private individuals had substantial bullion holdings in 10th-11th centuries. The value of mint activity as an index of the relative prosperity of boroughs is explored by D M Metcalf (159-212); he also computes the total volume of issues and relates it to the size of the Danegeld payments. David Hill (213-26) considers the evidence for the range of towns, the provision of new centres, and the response (the building of emergency burhs) to the Danish invasions. Remaining papers deal with administration, law, hagiography, and comparisons with France and Germany. |
