Abstract: |
Papers from a conference held in May 1979. D R Wilson reviews the evidence for architectural form, especially that for colonnaded ambulatories and open-sided cellae. T F C Blagg finds moulded stonework in only a few temples. P J Drury examines the long ancestry of simple religious buildings in Britain, Heathrow now finding an insular context. Altars, curses and other epigraphic evidence are examined by M W C Hassall, whlle M Henig looks at the art and cult images, regalia and small objects of temples. R Reece examines the influence of Christianity on Roman coin-art, and shows that the loss pattern of coins on temple sites is entirely consonant with that on other rural sites. A new approach to the systematic study of burials is presented by R A Chambers. A C Thomas demonstrates the insular roots of churches, chapels and martyria in post-Roman Britain, while R Morris and J Roxan believe that the number of churches and graveyards lying on significant Roman features cannot be fortuitous. W Rodwell summarizes recent advances and points to future research directions. Part 2 contains five papers on specific sites and areas: P Crummy on the large agglomeration of religious structures in Colchester; S Harker provides an up-to-date plan of the Springhead complex; R Downey, A King and G Soffe describe the Hayling Island site with its Iron Age timber shrine and Roman masonry temple of Gaulish connections; A Ellison reports the Uley sequence of enclosures, structures, and ritual deposits of 1st century BC to 6th AD; and R Leech considers interaction between Roman pagan and Celtic Christian in S Somerset and N Dorset. Finally two gazetteers are presented: P D Horne and A King treat the Continental European Romano-Celtic temples (plans, descriptions and bibliographies), while W Rodwell presents a revision of Lewis' gazetteer for Britain.
