J K St Joseph welcomes the establishment of this new journal devoted solely to air photography for archaeology, and discusses the potential of East Anglia for aerial research. Part I of the journal consists of reports from five committees; Anglian Region (D R Wilson), Northern (T Gates), Joint Midlands (J Pickering), Yorkshire (D N Riley), and CBA (G Webster). The need for increased collaboration between 'air' and 'ground' archaeologists is stressed and an emphasis placed on long-term strategic reconnaissance rather than rescue shots. Part II (pp 7-29) contains fifteen short papers on survey, interpretation and results. An aircraft pilot, R G Gregory recommends the use of a Piper Super Cub and gives technical hints on its handling for air photography. S G Upex discusses ceremonial and occupation sites away from the Fen edge and D N Riley comments on the 50th anniversary of the first AP of Venta Icenorum. D G Buckley and C J Going have photographed an ?imperial estate building at Chignall St James, while R Downey, A King and G Soffe have photographed (using numerous techniques) and excavated a Roman temple with Iron Age predecessor on Hayling Island (see also 78/5553). C Partridge defines a type of enclosure with cranked sides. E A Horne describes fiight procedures and recent reconnaissance results in E Anglia while J H Boyes has been examining industrial sites. AP for nautical and freshwater sites is discussed by E Rowell, and a cautionary tale about a bomb crater is related by D A Edwards. The Colchester and Ipswich aerial survey programme is discussed by G D B Jones while T S Bell describes agricultural service photography. A Taylor writes of the Cambridgeshire Archaeological Committee's work on plotting APs and J Pickering contributes to the debate on air photography versus excavation. Part III describes the official collections (National Monuments Record, Cambridge University, Nene Valley, University of E Anglia) and the private collections, museums and planning departments concerned with AP files in the area. Maps showing the coverage of each are given. |
