Abstract: |
Of the 7000 mould fragments from Pit 209, 4600 were identifiable (terrets, bridle bits, linchpin terminals, strap unions, etc). The fifty sets of chariot equipment were possibly made as one assignment in a temporary workshop set up by itinerant metallurgists, rather than as a regular activity within the farmstead. The moulds were well made of refractory clays, the castings had a high level of success, and many of the techniques were as advanced as today's. Much of the decoration was cast rather than cold-worked, and textile was used in the cire-perdu process. |
