A large-scale survey of graveyards in Newport and a series of rural parishes in northern and southern Pembrokeshire, which included both Welsh and English speaking areas and Church of Wales and non-conformist graveyards, was undertaken to examine the variability in mortuary practice during the nineteenth and twentieth century. The use of language on the monuments to study the cultural geography of the area is considered as the first part of an ongoing research project analysing the survey data.

The largest excavation of a medieval rural hospital in recent years has concentrated on earthworks, including building platforms, in the north-west corner of the site. Most of the buildings excavated were built of timber, however the hospital chapel building, which has been identified in the eastern half of the site was constructed of stone. The main chapel building dates from the thirteenth century but overlies stone foundations which may have been from an earlier chapel. There is evidence for continuity of occupation in some areas of the site through to at least the sixteenth century.
