During 2004 fragments of Roman tile were discovered on Hatherleigh Moor; some of the pieces are wasters, indicating the site of a Roman tilery. Geophysical survey of the area has identified the probable site of a kiln, with possible evidence of ancillary structures. Petrological examination has shown that the tiles made here have a distinctive fabric. Comparative study of the petrology of tiles from five other Roman sites in mid-Devon showed that tiles were manufactured by at least five tileries. Separately authored contributions include

Excavations at the site of a proposed quarry extension near Town Farm, Burlescombe, exposed the remains of three Saxon iron-smelting furnaces dating from between the late-eighth and late-tenth centuries. The furnaces are non-slag-tapping, open bowls with no substantial superstructure beyond a baffle wall protecting the bellows and forming the blowing-hole. In these, slag accumulated forming large, heterogeneous blocks. The presence of hammerscale and the nature of the slags produced in the furnaces suggest, in the absence of evidence for smithing hearths, that the furnaces had a dual function: the first to produce a bloom of iron from the raw materials, the second to re-heat the blooms for smithing. In the medieval period the bishops of Exeter had a substantial manor house at Chudleigh. The paper reviews the documentary evidence relating to the site, presents a field survey of the earthworks, and describes a detailed examination of the standing buildings. The fragmentary remains indicate that the complex had an irregular plan, with large stone buildings loosely arranged within a walled precinct, probably with internal courtyards. The best-preserved structure consists of a pair of vaulted cellars; these are interpreted as part of a hall range with chambers on the first floor, probably datable to the late-thirteenth or early-fourteenth century. Report on observations made during works to replace lightning conductors at the Church of St Mary, Ottery St Mary, during 2005. Significant observations were made in two of the six pits, one of these being located close to the south tower, east of the south porch. The north face of a fairly substantial wall aligned east--west was exposed; it was constructed of flint nodules and rubble sandstone, bonded in lime mortar and no dressed facing stones were visible. In both pits fragments of medieval earthenware floor-tile were recovered from graveyard soils. Separately authored appendices include
