Henrietta Quinnell
1 - 12
Concentrates on the 2nd millennium BC and uses S M Pearce's corpus and dating (with some modifications); but there is a need now to examine the non-metal aspects. Areas where fresh evidence is needed are indicated and a chart of calibrated radiocarbon dates is provided using the Belfast curve.
Excavations and building recording at Buckfast Abbey, Devon
Simon Brown
13 - 89
Excavation preceded improvements to visitor facilities at this Cistercian (originally Savignac) house. The 12th century precinct boundary was found on the W side, and buildings of the outer court on that side were uncovered. The enclosure was enlarged in early 13th century but never built up. The gatehouse remains are of early 14th century date - this was among the largest med halls in Devon and Cornwall, and overlay a hall of ?12th century. 'Abbey Farm' is a late med S wing of the gatehouse. No remains of the Saxon foundation were found. Au(much abr)
A Romano-British villa near Crediton
F M Griffith
137 - 142
Air photos revealed a simple E-plan building with three main rooms, set in a rectilinear enclosure. A trench cut to confirm the identification on this anomalously low-lying site produced late 3rd century material, though an earlier phase is also possible. More search in 'unlikely' places is clearly needed.
Devon castles: an annotated list
Robert A Higham
142 - 149
The list gives thirty-eight castles, plus twenty licences to crenellate, and ten dubious or rejected candidates, with bibliography for each.
