Abstract
Survey and excavation at High Rochester, Northumberland 1992
James G Crow
30 - 34
Reports the results of a field programme to survey the fort, record vernacular standing buildings, undertake geophysical survey, and excavate sections through Dere Street, the Roman road. Four stone phases were isolated on the west curtain wall -- the first phase associated with an Antonine inscription, the fourth with one of the Severan period. Evidence from Dere Street exhibited a reduction in width over time, in line with the supposed concomitant reduction in status of the fort.
Ebb's Nook, Beadnell, Northumberland
Peter J Fowler
45 - 50
A report based on initial and follow-up surveys of the site of a medieval chapel which had been noted in nineteenth century antiquarian writings. Generally mentioned in isolation, the chapel is in fact part of a structural complex. Walled enclosures and other building remains are to be found on the promontory, a cross stood nearby and there was also a Christian cemetery. The complex as a whole is thought to date to the twelfth or thirteenth century, with possible features dating from the seventh. Links with St Ebba are difficult to confirm; however the position of the site may indicate early Christian use.
Dryslwyn Castle excavation, 1992
Chris Caple
51 - 55
Reports continuing work at the site during this year. Objectives included looking for building traces predating the clay floored buildings in Area G, the courtyard flooring sequence, earliest features in Area P, and construction and flooring in the area of the gateway.
Anglesey landscape project 1992
Matthew Johnson
56 - 61
Reports continuing survey of standing buildings, now expanded to take in field boundaries along with documentary evidence. Buildings surveyed this season included seventeenth to nineteenth century examples along with a possible medieval structure. Geophysical survey revealed medieval and post medieval activity in the Bryn Celli area.
Old Durham Gardens 1992
Anne Bowman
62 - 67
As part of a continuing project to investigate and thence restore the post-medieval gardens this season's work dwelt on the layout of the upper garden area. The seventeenth century layout of the upper garden is presented.
