Abstract
The last Neanderthal in France?
Arthur M Ap Simon
271 - 272
The discovery of a 'classic' Neanderthal skeleton in a Lower Perigordian (Châtelperronian) level at Saint Césaire, S W France, revives the question of the replacement of the W European Neanderthals by Homo sapiens sapiens c 35/30,000 BP. Three explanatory hypotheses are considered. Direct evolution now seems unlikely; but the alternatives are not easy to document archaeologically. C B
Radiocarbon variations with the 11-year solar cycle during the last century
A A Burchuladze
320 - 322
Radiocarbon assay of wines from the period 1909-52 indicated 14C variations with an average amplitude of only 4.3 + 1.1% during the 11-year solar cycle. The reasons for the extreme cycles of 10% amplitude found by Baxter et al are poorly understood.
Carbon-13 in tree-ring cellulose as an indicator of past climates

432 - 435
Evidence is presented to show that variations of the relative abundance of stable isotopes of carbon in tree-rings indicate past climatic changes: thus carbon isotope composition appears to be a proxy indicator that may help to extend the meteorological data base into pre-instrument times.
