Presents the results of an integrated archaeological and palaeoecological investigation following the discovery of waterlogged worked-wood in a small boggy hollow on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons. Analysis of the pollen, radiocarbon and dendrochronological evidence suggests the main phase of activity at the site involved local clearance of the primary oak forest in the early-third millennium BC. Later activity at the site is indicated by dates in the mid-first millennium AD along with two pewter bowls of known Roman form. A tree-ring chronology spans the period 3098--2730 BC. Neolithic woodworking techniques are examined from what was for the most part debris from the processing of large trees. Possible parallels for the site are discussed and suggestions made for its use. Includes

The paper challenges the assumption that textile production at the Glastonbury Lake Village was an industry rather than a domestic activity. Glastonbury was built on a man-made platform in a flooded swamp and preservation of artefacts was good due to the development of peat after the site was abandoned. This has enabled craft tools used in the production of textiles to be studied. Discussion focuses on the function of the various implements of wood, antler, bone and clay, proposed by the excavators as tools used in a textile industry. The distribution of these tools across the site and over all four phases is considered, leading to the interpretation of textile production as a domestic activity.

The article describes the commitment of English Heritage to developing integrated strategies for the management of wetlands, and reviews the general approach to management of archaeological resources in wetland environments.

The article outlines the development of wetland protection movements in Europe, with three case studies from Denmark, Germany and France.
