Abstract
Ground-freezing on archaeological excavations: lifting a medieval chalice from St Giles hospital, Brough
Examines the feasibility of using ground-freezing as a technique for lifting artefacts, and its advantages over other techniques. The different ground-freezing techniques are discussed, and the one chosen (using solid CO2) is described in detail. The paper then documents the use of ground-freezing in the field, to lift a medieval mortuary chalice.
