Abstract: |
Slag associated with craft workshops which occupied the site throughout the Roman period provided evidence of iron smithing and copper alloy working. Magnetic susceptibility testing of soil samples identified concentrations of hammerscale, also deriving from the forging of iron. Selected slag samples were examined by optical microscopy and analysed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analyser. The examination of crucible fragments and other non-ferrous metalworking debris will be the subject of a separate report. |
