Abstract:
This project studied metalworking activity from the site through a wide range of techniques. All bulk industrial debris was visually examined and the products of iron smelting and iron smithing were identified. Combining the results with phasing information suggests that smithing occurred on the site from the eighth century and smelting from the early to mid ninth century. However most debris was found in dumps of the mid ninth and tenth centuries. Slag and ore samples were analysed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) based energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis to better understand the raw materials and processes. Magnetic susceptibility measurement was carried out on soil samples to identify concentrations of hammerscale which would indicate the location of iron smithing. Unfortunately no such foci of activity were found. Some products of Saxon iron working, 14 knife blades, were studied using metallography. Most were of high quality with hardened steel edges.
