Abstract: |
Petrological analysis was undertaken on the only sherd of pottery associated with the Dover Bronze Age boat. This showed that the clay contained frequent angular pieces of `grog', several pieces of which could be seen to contain small fragments of lighter coloured grog within them, demonstrating an early form of the recycling of raw materials and the continuity of pottery tradition. The high micro-fossil content of the clay matrix of the Dover Boat sherd makes this a somewhat unusual fabric. Little thin-section work has been done to date on Bronze Age pottery from Kent, so it is not known if similar fabrics occur locally. In view of the micro-fossils present in the clay, a range of coccoliths were identified, suggesting that a Gault clay was used to make the [pottery] vessel. |
