Abstract: |
The metal-rich deposits on nearly fifty metalworking crucibles from first and second century AD contexts were analysed qualitatively by X-ray fluorescence. Gold, silver and copper alloys were melted with different types of crucibles being preferentially used for different alloys. A group of fifteen sherds from glassworking crucibles was also seen. Examination of the glassy deposits suggests they may be earlier than the fourth-fifth century AD date assigned to them on stratigraphic grounds. |
