Abstract
The peat hag 12th de Cardi Lecture, given 1987
John M Coles
68 - 73
Arrangements must be made to conserve at least some wetland and peat bog landscapes for the sake of their archaeological potential: 'models used to explain the past must be suspect if they are based on fragmentary, dried-out, decayed, eroded, and ephemeral evidence of the kind that dry sites yield'. Wet sites, when interpreted, give the public a far rounder and more immediate appreciation of the past and are thus highly effective in communicating archaeological work. Some world-wide examples of preservation of wetlands, and of their excavation where preservation is impossible, are cited.
