Abstract: |
The first of five volumes giving a complete history of the research, excavation and conservation work on the wreck of the Mary Rose up to 2003. Initial chapters recount the discovery of the wreck in 1836 and its re-discovery and initial survey work between 1965 and 1978. The author and other specialists describe the project to excavate and salvage the ship, to raise the hull from the seabed, to create a museum able to display the massive structure, and to continue monitoring of the wreck site. The book traces the history of the Mary Rose, one of the first great British warships, and give an overview of her history, combining all that is known from contemporary documents and the archaeological evidence. It sets out details of the circumstances of her building, participation in three wars with France, repairs and rebuilds, and finally the sinking with massive loss of life in Portsmouth Harbour in 1545. Also described are the place of the ship in naval and seafaring history, the distinctive aspects of her shape and construction, how she performed at sea, her structure, rigging and armoury. An appendix lists historical sources. |
