Abstract:		 When Historic Royal Palaces established the Tower Environs Scheme in the mid 1990s to improve the area around the castle, the idea of reflooding the moat was one of the proposals under consideration, and a major programme of archaeological and technical investigations was undertaken to assess its feasibility. The volume presents a full account of the archaeological evaluation of the moat, together with the results of a complementary programme of historical research. Detailed evidence is presented for the development and condition of the moat from the mid-thirteenth century to the present day, including the unexpected discovery of the remains of a short-lived entrance to the Tower, which was constructed for Henry III in 1240. The evaluations also recovered substantial evidence for Edward I's programme of expansion of the Tower, and for the construction of de Gomme's outer moat revetment wall during the later seventeenth century. The deteriorating condition of the moat is considered in detail, leading to the decision in the 1840s to drain and backfill it. Finds from the evaluation programme are discussed and illustrated, including interesting examples of medieval leatherwork, post-medieval pottery and clay pipes, and a virtually complete wicker fish trap. The volume also reports and discusses the extensive programme of scientific analysis of the moat fills, ad the programme of dendrochronological dating.
