Abstract:
The Arrow Valley Archaeology, Landscape Change and Conservation Project was organised as a pilot project within the broader Herefordshire Rivers LEADER+ project, and was a partnership project between Herefordshire Archaeology and the Arrow Valley Farmers group. The project addressed several aims, among them the exploration of the history and identity of the area and raising awareness of the heritage and cultural aspects of the rivers, floodplains and valleys. It addressed these through landscape survey initiatives and site-based studies, conservation works and seminars, and provision of information. Among its results were the beginnings of a new framework for understanding previous archaeological discoveries, and a starting point for appreciating the origins and development of settlement in the valley; site investigations at Staunton-on-Arrow of Iron Age enclosures and a previously unsuspected early multi-phase prehistoric settlement, the latest period of use of which was dated c. 2000-1600 BC; evidence for the origins of local field systems in the Iron Age, and for the development of farms during the Roman period; and site investigations at The Leen, Pembridge, which provided a date for the construction of the linear earthwork monument Rowe Ditch of after AD 200. The project also provided considerable evidence for the development of landscape of the river catchment area, and raised awareness of conservation issues, including the preservation and recording of features of archaeological and historic significance.
