Abstract
Fieldwork and excavations near Thwing, East Yorks 2006
Rose Ferraby
Paul Johnson
Martin Millett
3 - 5
Note on a geophysical survey and excavation undertaken in 2006 near Thwing, at the site of a previously identified prehistoric ladder settlement and stone building. The settlement was shown to post-date the major dyke system running along the ridge to the south of the excavation, and to be probably Iron Age in date, with three broad sets of enclosure types and indications of differing functions with at least two areas associated with settlement. A series of round houses was indicated near the junction with the Late Bronze Age dyke, and the other settlement area, including the excavated structure, had evidence for extensive Roman activity and a possible Iron Age precursor. The excavated hall-type structure was shown to be domestic in character, comprising two rooms of unequal status.
Romans on the Don

The article presents an overview of archaeological evidence for activity during the Roman period in the Doncaster district, from ten sites identified through cropmark evidence and excavated in advance of development. In particular, the sites of Brodsworth (Pickburn Leys), Hampole (Hazel Lane), Stainton (Holme Hall) and Barnsdale Bar are described.
