Three papers given in 1975 in Rome under an exchange agreement with the British Academy. C F C Hawkes (pp 3-10 Engl summary, 11-25 Italian text) pursues the theme of the Celticizing of Britain, laying stress on religious, funerary, and social aspects from 'Beaker peoples' onwards. E M Jope (27-36) examines four parade shields - from R Witham, Wandsworth (two), and Battersea - to show how elements from the classical world were adopted and transmuted by Celtic artists. In `Nemeton, temenos, bothros' Stuart Piggott (37-54) discusses Celtic sanctuaries with particular reference to the small timber roofed shrines (eg Heathrow), the circular temenos enclosures (eg Navan), the deep shafts and wet sites (eg Newstead, Carlingwark), and evidence for animal sacrifice (eg Blewburton). All these have a long insular tradition back to the Neolithic, as well as Continental and Mediterranean echoes, and any incoming Indo-European religious ideas were probably profoundly influenced by them. |
