Abstract: |
NY 0337. Reports the excavations of 1966, brings together earlier references to the site and discusses the various garrisons and the fort's place in the Solway defensive system. The fort was probably a patrol base against Scottish raiders, and occupation began about AD 122 by a milliary unit (Coh I Hisp eq), its commander possibly in charge of the whole milecastle-and-turret system along the coast. During much of 2nd century a coh 500 ped was in garrison, perhaps remaining to about 400. The vicus in 3rd-4th centuries was important and prosperous. Particular attention is given to the unique series of altars from the annual dedication ceremonies, and finds are catalogued. Watching briefs should be maintained in the vicinity. |
