Abstract: |
Reports historical and archaeological research done under a Community Project scheme. No archaeological evidence for the Norman castle was found and rebuilds had started from ground level each time. A ditch, scarping of bedrock and presumptive shell keep may date from later 12th. A residential tower was built over the backfilled ditch. Two Civil War sieges were undergone, a courthouse built in 18th century, and ?lockups added in 19th. Pottery, clay pipes, horse burial. |
