Abstract: |
Excavated were eighteen buildings spanning 5th-11th centuries, occupied only three or four at a time, and comprising sunken huts, post-built structures, trenched foundations, aisled structures and a masonry tower. A cemetery of twenty-one Late Saxon burials, mostly paired, is described, as are four wells and over fifty pits. Plans illustrate the eight phases, and sections from Volume 1 are repeated for convenience. Finds include comparatively rich metalwork, some 9th century coins, and over 20,000 animal bones. The site came into royal possession in 904, appeared in the Burghal Hidage and was given to William Mauduit at the Conquest. |
