Long barrows of Northern England; structural and dating evidence

A survey of the non-megalithic long barrows of England north of a line from the Wash to the Dee estuary, with an appendix listing long barrows and related round barrows. The construction sequence of long barrows began with a large trapezoidal enclosure possessing a timber façade, within which the burials were concentrated between earthern banks and associated with pits; the façades were normally destroyed by fire prior to building the mound. The significance of crematoria remains a problem. Grave-goods are scarce, but deposits of pottery and animal bones at several sites appear to represent deliberately-laid occupation debris, perhaps serving the same ritual role as grave-goods. Dating evidence suggests that the construction of long barrows and related round barrows began before 3000 BC and continued throughout the 2nd millennium BC. (see also 72/1143). Au
The long cairns of Eastern Scotland

Single-period mounds are normally trapezoidal and built of stone or earth and stone, showing no evidence of a stone chamber. Two-period mounds consist of a primary round or heel-shaped cairn with an attached, usually long, cairn. Multi-period mounds are composite monuments showing more than two conjoined cairns. Single-period mounds and primary round cairns in SE Scotland are likely to contain timber mortuary structures, while north of the Moray Firth many long cairns contain or are secondary to a passagegrave. Forecourts and façades are comparable with those of English long barrows, some of which are also composite monuments. The evidence suggests that long cairns and long barrows are ritual monuments in themselves, separate from the existing burial structures which were sometimes incorporated into them. Palisaded sites in North Britain: their context and affinities

The distribution of known timber-palisaded sites is concentrated in the Tyne-Forth area of N Britain. Single-family homesteads and multiple-family settlements are represented, and a tendency is apparent towards chronological separation of the two, whereby settlements predominate between the 7th and 4th centuries BC and homesteads predominate between the 4th and 2nd centuries. Paucity of associated artefacts will not allow estimation of the cultural context of northern palisades, and there is no convincing evidence of a continental origin for the type of site. Palisades represent the earliest form of non-defensive enclosed site in N Britain, and their adoption reflects the development of widespread permanent settlement. Early settlement and topography in the Border counties

Settlement distribution can sometimes be explained in terms of differential topography and soils; thus, IA fort-builders utilised the defensible scarps of the Northumberland Fell Sandstones, but the acid soils were unattractive to Romano-British farmers. In other cases, topography does not provide adequate explanation for lack of settlement. An apparent absence of pre-Roman and RB settlement in SE Northumberland was rectified by air-photography, which has revealed four types of site enclosed by earthworks. The problem in E Dumfriesshire has been the absence of the RB stone-built settlement familiar in Votadinian territory. The explanation is that RB settlements in E Dumfriesshire retained the tradition of timber-built houses, perhaps because suitable stone was not available, and candidates will probably be found among the non-defensive hill-slope and river-terrace sites known in the area. Problems of the Roman northern frontier

Outstanding problems in the study of the Roman occupation of N Britain concern gaps in both structural and historical evidence. The positions of the Domitianic and Trajanic frontiers have yet to be established, and there is insufficient material proof of the Stanegate limes. A major problem is the relative occupations of the two Walls and their adjacent forts, though the evidence is now pointing to AD 180 rather than 197 for the end of Hadrian's Wall Period Ib, and to the absence of any period Antonine III. Structural problems include details of Flavian forts and the late anatomy of forts along Hadrian's Wall and the Stanegate. Stress is laid upon the shortage in Scotland of trained Romanists. A R
