[TL 1307]. This volume is confined to the excavations of the NE side of insula XIV, an area vital for its contribution to the sequence of stratified pottery (often in 5-10 year phases) which runs up to at least AD 175. In Period I, AD 43-60, there are few occupation traces until c 49 when timber-framed shops were erected to military standards of quality. The Boudiccan fire caused a 15-year hiatus before another continuous row of shops was built and eventually reconstructed. The next phase apparently saw a change to individual ownership when, c 130-150, single-unit blocks were built behind the portico. The final half-timbered series was put up c 150-155/60 and destroyed by the fire that burnt much of the city. The site lay empty for over a century until a long block of stone shops was built c 275 and occupied well into 4th century. Remains of metal-working at all periods show the craft basis of these shops. Specialist reports deal with non-ferrous and iron objects, glass, decorated samian and stamps, other pottery listed by dated layers, mortarium stamps and soil samples.
