Abstract: |
A Norman or 12th century manor house had a single ?aisled hall, kitchen, and east range, chapel, barns, and gardens. All tofts had late 12th/early 13th century pottery. In 13th and early 14th century the manor house was much modified, but abandoned at the end of the phase. The tofts continued in occupation in late 14th/early 15th, but lime kilns inserted into the manor house structure destroyed much of it. It is not known whether the chapel was for village or lord. One of the toft houses was expanded into a hall-house in late 15th/16th century. In about 1625 Thrislington Hall was built, with associated farm structures. A number of lessons can be drawn from this type of site, which as 'a scheduled island in a corrosive sea' (of quarrying) had already lost its landscape context. The discussion examines village processes, population, production, causes of desertion, spheres of interests, degree of discomfort, etc. |
