Abstract
Excavations at Okehampton Castle, Devon. Part 1: the motte and keep
Robert A Higham
3 - 42
SX 584943. Excavation on the summit and E face of the motte elucidated the building sequence which started with a roughly square stone tower of c 1068-86, rebuilt and doubled in size by c 1300. The raising of the motte was continuing as the keep's lower courses were being laid. A former motte ditch appears to underlie the bailey buildings. The history of the castle is also outlined.
A38 roadworks 1970-3
Henrietta Quinnell
43 - 52
Surveillance of twenty-three miles of new road demonstrated the difficulties of locating sites in the S Devon landscape and contrasted strongly with the M5 work in Gloucestershire and Somerset. Possible reasons are that the subsoil conditions may demand slow work by experienced archaeologists; that the road line avoids ancient as well as modern settlements; or that sites have been ploughed off.
