Abstract
An Ancient and Historic Place; The Archaeology of Cheadle
Booklet setting out the history and archaeology of Cheadle, a village in Greater Manchester (formerly North Cheshire). Cheadle has its historical origins in Anglo-Saxon times, although there is evidence of Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman activity. The medieval and post-medieval development of the village is outlined and some of its most important historic buildings are described. Several recent archaeological investigations, including excavations at Cheadle Green and Cheadle Bleach Works, have begun to transform knowledge of the character and origins of the settlement. These have included both community projects and work secured through archaeological conditions within the planning system, the background to which is outlined. LD
