Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) on behalf of J R and R A Johnson prior to the proposed works of new services to two cottages situated within the area of a moated site at New Hall Park Farm, Enderby Road, Thurlaston, Leicestershire. The location of the development is situated within a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SMR SP58NE.N), comprising of a series of earthwork banks and ditches, therefore the groundworks had potential to disturb any surviving buried archaeological deposits. Planning permission and Scheduled Monument Consent had been granted on the condition that a scheme of archaeological investigation was implemented, comprising of archaeological attendance for inspection and recording during the groundworks. The groundworks uncovered walls and other features containing finds ranging from the 12th century through to the 15th century. The site archive will be held by Leicestershire County Council, Heritage Services Section, accession number X.A20.2005.
