Abstract: |
In order to determine the archaeological risk posed by a proposal to construct new housing on land between St Nicholas St and Minstergate, Thetford, Norfolk, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the landowner to undertake a programme od archaeological evaluation. Three trenches were excavated across the proposed development site. Trench 1, to the rear of the St Nicholas Street frontage, contained two large early medieval quarry pits, a large medieval pit, and a large modern trench with two brick piers. Trench 2, to the south-west of Trench 1, contained a large capped well, a late post-medieval pit and an undated pit. Trench 3, to the south-west of Trench 2, contained a large undated pit, a large late post-medieval post pad, two late post-medieval modern pits and two modern postholes. The evaluation demonstrated activity on the site from the early medieval period, but no direct evidence of occupation predating the post medieval period. |
