Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation of land off Aston street, Wrm, Shropshire, was undertaken by Birmingham Archaeology in March 2007, in advance of proposed residential development. Evaluation was aimed at locating 17th century Civil War defences indicated by documentary evidence. Previous investigation had found no evidence for these defences. Three trial trenches were excavated, with one revealing evidence of two wide parralel ditches which may have formed part of the civil war defences. The secondary fill of one of the ditches revealed 17th/18th century pottery, whilst the single fill of the other inplied rapid backfilling that may have occured at the end of the civil war. This was later re-cut by a ditch containing 18th/19th century pottery, whilst another trial trench located a possible field boundary ditch of 18th century or earlier date. |
