Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) during groundworks for the construction of a 11/2 storey dwelling house on land adjacent to The Priory, Priory road, Manton, Rutland (SK 881 047) No previous archaeological work had been undertaken on the site, and the last piece of archaeological fieldwork to be carried out in Manton appears to have been as long ago as 1996. The brief from the County Archaeologist has identified the area to be of archaeological potential, due to the sites situation within the medieval and post-medieval settlement core of the village. The Watching Brief revealed stratified archaeological deposits and pottery from the Roman through to the Post-medieval periods. Two field system alignments from the Saxo-Norman to medieval periods were discovered along with a medieval to late medieval wall and cobbled surface, probably associated with the Priory.
