Abstract: |
Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit undertook a small archaeological excavation at 1-3 Fairycroft Road, Saffron Walden, in advance of the construction of two small apartments. One of the aims of the excavation was to look for the eastern arm of the medieval town ditch (the Magnum Fossatum). The excavation found remnants of post-medieval/modern roadside buildings, but no medieval features or finds, nor any trace of the Magnum Fossatum. It is concluded that much of the eastern arm of the Magnum Fossatum runs beneath Fairycroft Road, and that Fairycroft Road is post-medieval in origin. |
