Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on ground reduction and the excavation of foundation trenches for an extension to a residential property that lay only 2.5m from the northeast corner of the medieval Saffron Walden Castle keep. A probable pre-castle land-surface, or at least its subsoil, remains largely in tact, buried below c.0.5m of re-deposited chalk-rich deposits that represent the mounding of excavated material around the foot of the keep during its construction (c.1141). A fragment of post-medieval flint walling has been incorporated into the south wall of the existing dwelling. It contains a piece of carved masonary, possibly a lion''s head spout, perhaps derived from the castle. The wall probably represents the surviving remains of the rear boundary of the 18th century properties that once fronted onto Castle Street at this location. |
