Abstract: |
The archaeological excavation of two trial trenches preceded the construction of a new house alongside the quay at Burnham-on-Crouch. The trial trenches found that behind the quay lies 1.2m of made ground containing early 18th-century finds. They also revealed that the made ground overlies an estuarine deposit and seals the remains of post-medieval wooden stakes and archaeological features. The associated report concludes that the made ground is related to the construction of the quay and that the quay was founded in the early 18th century. |
