Abstract:
In order to assess the archaeological risk posed by a proposal to redevelop the Huntingdon District Council offices at Pathfinder House, St Mary''s Street, Huntingdon, the Heritage Network was commissioned by Huntingdon District Council to undertake a desk-based archaeological assessment of the site and a programme of archaeological evaluation. A study of the documentary and database evidence relating to Huntingdon indicated that there was a low to moderate risk that evidence from the Prehistoric to the Iron Age would survive on the site, and there is a high risk that evidence from the Roman to Modern periods would survive. In order to characterise the defined archaeological potential of the site, six trenches were machined to the first significant archaeological horizon. Artefacts and deposits were encountered from four periods: Romano-British, Medieval, Post-Medieval and Modern. It is clear that the current development of the present site will have an impact on remains of potential archaeological significance. It is considered that features and deposits located beneath the car park immediately to the west of Pathfinder House are at the greatest risk.
