Abstract:
A proposed large residential development to the north-west of the village of Blairhall, Fife prompted archaeological monitoring works. This was restricted to the initial phase of ground breaking, in relation to the spine roads, site compound and SUDS drainage which extended across the majority of the development area. To the immediate south of the development area was the site of Comrie Castle, which is depicted on Roys Military Map as a large house. It is speculated that Comrie Castle was a late medieval fortified tower of local significance, which may explain the lack of information regarding the site. However, it is probable that the structure was rebuilt in the 18th-19th century in the form of a country mansion house. This was latterly demolished in the 1960s. Located in the eastern portion of the development area was the heavily overgrown early 20th century curling pond. Nothing of interest was reveled during the course of the ground breaking works. No significant archaeological finds were made in the course of these monitoring works.
