Abstract:
In June 2006 North Pennines Archaeology Ltd was commissioned to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment and site visit in advance of a proposed redevelopment at the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Annexe site. The annexe lies close to Penrith Castle and is likely to have once formed part of its outer grounds during the later medieval period. Medieval stray finds had been discovered in the vicinity. The assessment results concluded that Penrith expanded significantly in the later medieval period. Penrith Castle was constructed in the late 14th century and was likely to have included the annexe grounds. The report recommended a programme of archaeological evaluation.
