Abstract: |
A single test pit, measuring 1.6m x 0.70m x 1.20m deep, was excavated in the car park of Pathfinder House. It was located between Trenches 1 and 2 of the previous evaluation. The concrete foundations for a building erected during WWII and still standing in the 1970s were revealed. Below this were 2 layers which have been interpreted as continuations of layers seen in Trenches 1 and 2 of the previous evaluation. The upper layer (06) comprised a very dark grey silty clay, 0.10m deep and which produced 1 rim sherd of early medieval date and a cattle tooth. The lower layer (07) was not breached and consisted of very dark grey friable clayey silt. Two sherds of late Roman pottery and 3 fragments of animal bone were recovered. These are probabaly continuations of layers previously seen in Trenches 1 and 2 and were interpreted as the remnants of a garden soil overlying a Medieval plough soil. |
