Abstract:
This report was commissioned by Neil Grinnall Homes (the client) in order to assess the standing buildings and the possible survival of sensitive archaeological deposits at the site of 42-52 Diglis Road, Worcester. The site is located between the inner canal basin of the Birmingham to Worcester Canal and Diglis Road. Due to the low lying marshy nature of the ground and the position of the site on the flood plain of the River Severn, previous development of the site has been limited; the land largely having been used as pasture. The canal and its associated basins near its confluence with the river were built in the early 19th century. Whilst some evidence relating to the use of the site in Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods may survive beneath the 19th and 20th century buildings currently on the site, the deposits most likely to retain the best preserved part of the archaeological record are the sealed beds of alluvial material underlying the site. These have the potential to provide general environmental information about the Severn and the lower Frog Brook. Parts of the site retain some of the mid-19th century building stock. There appears to be a surviving courtyard, one of three which once bordered the Worcester and Birmingham Canal: it also has the added interest of a ginnel. The Millwrights building on the side of Diglis basin has a fixed jib crane attached to it.
