Abstract:
During May 2007, an archaeological evaluation was undertaken at Radcliffe School, Wolverton, in advance of development. Earlier geophysics work on the site had identified a number of magnetic anomalies interpreted as ditches and pits. Based on the results of the geophysics, two areas were trenched. Nineteen trenches were opened to the north of the school on the playing field and four in a field to the south of the school. Within the northern area a number of linear features interpreted as Roman field boundary ditches. Two pairs of parallel ditches orientated SE-NW were interpreted as trackside ditches. A number of small Roman pits were also identified in this area. The only non Roman feature identified was a small pit from which a number of sherds of early Saxon pottery were recovered. In the southern area there was generally less archaeology. However a crouched burial was uncovered in one of the trenches. Though no material to date the burial was found, this type of burial is generally associated with the prehistoric period and the Bronze Age in particular. It is possible that the burial was under a barrow mound, though no evidence for such a mound or surrounding ditch was seen during the evaluation.
